about

Taken from the unreleased album 'Kleine Stücke #1 - The Infiltration Of Silent Gestures' (NominalMusics, 2001).

While decluttering some shelves, I came upon a box of 15 unused floppy disks, which I’d been keeping for no obvious or logical reason. What to do with them? I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away, but also couldn’t find any way of recycling them.

I began exploring ways that I could use the disks. I found an old, unreleased 30-second track I’d made in 2000 under the Sketching Venus alias. It was made using a second-hand Casio VL-TONE VL-1 keyboard and Maplin echo unit. I found that if I saved that down as a horribly low bandwidth mp3, it would comfortably fit onto a disk (they have a 1.44mb capacity). There was just enough room to add a 2003 photograph of the VL-1 and an explanatory text file.

You could call it a response to waste, the exponential growth of data storage demands, redundant technology and obsolescence. Or you could call it a cynical ploy to turn garbage into art (for cash). You decide.

The low-bandwidth unmastered mp3 edition is available in a limited, hand-numbered edition of 15 copies.
